Genus Liris FABRICIUS, 1804 View in CoL

Description: FABRICIUS, 1804: 227.

Typus generis: Sphex auratus FABRICIUS, 1787 (= Sphex aurulentus FABRICIUS, 1787 ). Distribution: All zoogeographical regions.

Valid species: 25.

The gender of the genus Liris is feminine according to FABRICIUS (1804), because a lot of species names are ending with –a (ICZN Article 30.2.2). As FABRICIUS lived several years in Paris, the name probably derives from the French word "l’iris" (flower iris). I don’t follow MENKE & BOHART (1979: Proceedings of the Entomological Society 81 (1): 117), that the genus name derives from the latin name of the river Garigliano and the gender is masculine (see above).
