An Afro-American species and the most common representative of the genus in tropical America, ranging from Cuba and Honduras to Bolivia and SE Brazil, apparently rare in Africa, from where it is known from Tanzania, Malawi, S Africa and the Mascarenes ( Gradstein 2013).
