Widespread Afro-American species, incl. Hawaii ( Gradstein 2012), previous reports from Panama (including M. bongardiana (Lehm. & Lindenb.) Trevis. and M. languida (Nees & Mont.) Steph. ) are from the Canal Zone, Chiriqui, Los Santos and Panamá provinces. Heinrichs et al. (2009) provided a phylogenetic study of Marchesinia .
