Type Locality: "America meridionali;" restricted to Brazil, Pernambuco, Pernambuco (= Recife), by Thomas (1911 a) .
Vernacular Names: Southern Tamandua.
Synonyms: Tamandua longicaudata (Turner 1853) ; Tamandua nigra Beaux 1908 ; Tamandua opisthomelas Gray 1873 ; Tamandua mexianae Cabrera 1958 ; Tamandua longicauda Vesey-FitzGerald 1936 ; Tamandua longicauda Rode 1937 .

Distribution: South America east of the Andes from Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, and the Guianas, south to Uruguay and N Argentina.
Conservation: IUCN – Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: The names longicaudata , nigra , opisthomelas , and tamandua , cannot be assigned to subspecies with certainty because their type localities are too general.
