Note on Simulium (Wilhelmia) quadri ®la in Spain

Simulium (Wilhelmia) quadri®la Grenier, Faure and Laurent , has not been found in Andalusia but its known distribution suggests that this rare species is probably present somewhere in this region of Spain and that its ®nding can be expected. The species has been recorded only from its Moroccan type locality ( AõÈn Djemma near Casablanca ), from the Rif north of Tetouan (that part of Morocco closest to Spain), and from two widely separate d points in Spain. However , we have ourselves collected the species from several rivers in north-central Spain and are able to augment the scanty distributional knowledge so far available by giving the data of our material in this paper (see below). The two previously published records for S. (W.) quadri ®la in Spain were by Beauournu-Saguez (1975a), who found some larvae and pupae at Agromon , 7 km SE of HellõÂn in Albacete Province, and by GonzaÂlez PenÄa (1990), who collected one larva from a site on the RõÂo Trabancos at Sieteiglesias in Valladolid Province ( UL1983 ).

The pupa and mature larva (pharate pupa) are easily identi®ed by the very distinctive gill. This has a general resemblance to that of S. (W.) sergenti but diOEers by having only one massive primary tube in addition to the basal arms and one small secondary tube or none. The gill is illustrated in Beaucournu-Saguez (1975a). The isolated larva found by GonzaÂlez in RõÂo Trabancos (Duero river system) was identi®ed by its pharate pupal gill, recently illustrated by GonzaÂlez (1997).

Our material from north-central Spain (all in BMNH) was collected in summer 1972 and was found in company with other species of the subgenus Wilhelmia , as indicated in the following specimens listÐCuenca Province: 1m (1), 14 pupae , 27

larvae, RõÂo San Martin, 10 km SW of Cuenca on N 420 road to Olivares, 20.viii.1972 [1 sergenti and pseudequinum ]; 1 pupa, 1 larva, RõÂo ZaÂncara, 15 km NE of Belmonte on N 420 road to La Almarcha, 18.viii.1972 [1 lineatum and pseudequinum ]; 1 pupa, RõÂo GuadazoÂn, near Reillo, 4.5 km W of Carboneros de GuadazaoÂn on N 420 Cuenca-Teruel road, 21.viii.1972 [1 equinum , lineatum , pseudequinum ]. Toledo Province: 3 (l1), 2m (1), 16 pupae, 6 larvae, RõÂo CiguÈela, near Puebla de la Almoradiel, 9 km W of Quintanar de la Orden on C 402 [now CM 410] road to Tembleque, 18.viii.1972 [1 pseudequinum ]. Zaragoza Province: 15 pupae, 32 larvae, RõÂo Piedra, ca 4 km S of NueÂvalos and 1 km S of Piedra Monastery, 15.viii.1972 [1 lineatum , pseudequinum , sergenti ].
