Types. Chrysomela bipunctata . Three types were found at the BMNH and KIEL ( Zimsen 1964). Vachon (1980a) designated the type at BMNH as the Lectotype and the other two at KIEL as paralectotypes. Lectotype ♀ (BMNH), labeled: “ Type [p, w, circle label with red border] // Chr., 2punctata / Adorium / Fabr. p. ms. m. 64 [h, w] // NHMUK010601206 [p, w]”. Although both paralectotypes (♀♀) [one with head lost] do not bear any label, two labels are pinned besides them. One written as “2 puncta / ta [h, w]”, the other bears a pair of glued mandibles, one maxilla, and the labium, and one head and pronotum that belong to a cassidine species.

Type locality. Origin of the specimens was not clearly indicated by Fabricius (1801). However, Dejean (1836) indicated that it was from Java, Indonesia.

Redescription. Length 11.5–14.7 mm, width 5.9–8.8 mm. General color ( Figs 57A–57C View FIGURE 57 ) yellow; antennae yellow, antennomeres V–XI black but apex of antennomere XI yellow; a circular black spot on apical half of elytron, metasternum and abdominal ventrites black except lateral margins; apices of tibiae and tarsi darker. Antennae filiform in males ( Fig. 58A View FIGURE 58 ), antennomeres IV longest, VIII–X elongate, length ratios of antennomeres I–XI 1.0: 0.6: 0.9: 1.3: 1.1: 1.0: 0.9: 1.0: 0.9: 0.8: 1.2, length to width ratios of antennomeres I–XI 2.3: 1.8: 2.3: 2.9: 3.0: 2.6: 2.4: 2.7: 2.5: 2.8: 4.3; broader in female ( Fig. 58B View FIGURE 58 ), antennomeres IV longest, VIII–X elongate, length ratios of antennomeres I–XI 1.0: 0.5: 0.8: 1.1: 0.8: 0.8: 0.8: 0.8: 0.7: 0.7: 1.0, length to width ratios of antennomeres I–XI 2.5: 1.7: 2.1: 3.2: 2.3: 2.2: 2.1: 2.1: 1.9: 2.4: 3.4. Pronotum transverse, 1.9x wider than long, disc with or without reticulate microsculpture and fine punctures, baso-lateral angles broadly rounded, apico-lateral angles narrowly rounded and recurved, lateral margins rounded, apical margin concave. Elytra oblong, widest at middle, 1.4x longer than wide, disc with reticulate microsculpture and dense, coarse punctures; moderately convex, humeral calli prominent, transverse posterior depression behind humeral calli indistinct; epipleurae near lateral margins, located 9/10 distance between suture and lateral margins. Tarsomeres I of front and middle legs swollen in males. Penis ( Figs 58C–58E View FIGURE 58 ) slender, 6.6 x longer than wide; parallel-sided; bifurcate at apical 1/4, lateral process directed mesally and apically, subapically narrowed, apices of lateral processes rounded, near each other; tectum elongate and parallel-sided, apex truncate; slightly curved in lateral view, apices angular; ventral surface with narrow and deep notch from apex to apical 1/3, inside apex membranous; endophallic sac without sclerites. Apical margin of abdominal ventrite V in female broadly rounded, slightly depressed at middle. Gonocoxae reduced. Ventrite VIII ( Fig. 58F View FIGURE 58 ) longitudinal, apex square, apical margin truncate but medially depressed, with setae along apical margin; spiculum short. Receptacle of spermatheca ( Fig. 58G View FIGURE 58 ) as wide as pump, connected to pump; pump strongly curved; proximal spermathecal duct short with apical sclerotized area, covered with dense minute setae.

Variation. Black spots on the elytra vary between specimens from different localities. They are completely absent in specimens ( Figs 57E–57G View FIGURE 57 ) from Java and Bali. Specimens with spots largely extended and almost completely covering the elytra ( Fig. 58G View FIGURE 58 ) are described as O. indosinensis var. laboissierei .

Diagnosis. Although specimens exhibit various sizes of black elytral spots, they are easily recognized by the dull elytra and characteristic body shape. Some specimens are similar to specimens of O. affinis and O. andrewesi with yellow bodies and one pair of large black spots on the elytra, but members of Oides palleata possess relatively longer and hooked lateral processes and tectum of the penis.

Host plants. Vitaceae : Cayratia trifolia (L.) Domin (= Vitis trifolia ) ( Kalaichelvan & Verma 2005); Cayratia sp. and Tetrastigma sp. ( Medvedev & Dang 1982).

Remarks. Chrysomela bipuncata Fabricius, 1781 is not an available name because of primary homonymy with C. bipunctata Linnaeus, 1758 . Hincks (1949) proposed Oides andrewesi Jacoby, 1900 as an available name. However, it is actually a distinct species from O. bipunctata ( Fabricius, 1781) based on the present study. Thus, Oides palleata ( Fabricius, 1801) is a senior available name in synonymy with O. bipunctata ( Fabricius, 1781) .

One specimen was recorded from Taiwan: 1♂ (SDEI), Taihorinsho (= Talin,), VIII.1909, leg. Sauter. The record ( Chûjô 1935) is doubtful since no additional specimens have been collected. Kimoto & Chu (1996) assumed this specimen was a misidentification of O. maculata (= O. epipleuralis ), but they did not examine it.

Because O. andrewesi seems rarely collected and no additional specimens were found except for types, all specimens identified as O. andrewesi after the 1940s are assumed to be misidentified.

Some authors ( Olivier 1807; Dejean 1836; Zimsen 1964) spelled the name as ‘palliatum’. However, they refer to Adorium palleatum Fabricius, 1801 and not to Adorium palliatum Gerstaecker, 1871 , a species now treated as synonym of the African Oides collaris (Baly, 1861) .
