Types. Rhombopala duodecimpunctata . Holotype ♀ ( BMNH, by monotypy), labeled: “12 punctatum / (Chvr) Siam / D. Lethierry [h, y] // 12 punctata / Clark [h, b] // Oides / 12-punctata / Type Clark [h, w] // 67.56 [p, w] // Type [p, w] // Type [p, w, circle label with red border]”.
Oides niasensis . Lectotype ♀ (MCZC) here designated, labeled: “Lahago / Centraal Nias / 4II-10III 1896 / I. Z. Kannegieter [p, w] // Oides / niasensis / Type Bow [h, g] // Type [p] / 17532 [h, r]”. Depositories of other paralectotypes (3) are unknown to us.
Redescription. Length 10.9–13.5 mm, width 7.7–9.7 mm. General color ( Figs 28A–28C View FIGURE 28 ) yellow; antennae yellow, antennomeres IX–XI dark brown; pronotum with one pair of black spots at sides; scutellum black; most areas of metasternum black; elytra with six pairs of black spots, arranged into three transverse rows: two pairs near base; two pairs at middle; and two near apex; abdominal ventrites I–IV with one pair of black spots at sides, spots on ventrite I largest, smaller apically. Antennae filiform in males ( Fig. 29A View FIGURE 29 ), antennomeres IV longest, III–VII slightly serrate, VIII–X elongate, length ratios of antennomeres I–XI 1.0: 0.6: 1.1: 1.2: 1.1: 1.1: 1.0: 0.9: 0.8: 0.7: 0.9, length to width ratios of antennomeres I–XI 2.3: 1.7: 2.8: 3.5: 3.0: 2.9: 2.6: 2.4: 2.1: 2.1: 2.7; similar in females ( Fig. 29B View FIGURE 29 ), length ratios of antennomeres I–XI 1.0: 0.5: 1.1: 1.2: 0.9: 0.8: 0.8: 0.8: 0.7: 0.6: 0.8, length to width ratios of antennomeres I–XI 2.9: 1.8: 3.8: 4.0: 2.8: 2.5: 2.1: 2.3: 2.0: 1.9: 2.4. Pronotum transverse, 2.2 wider than long, disc convex, without reticulate microsculpture but with dense, fine punctures; baso-lateral angles broadly rounded, apico-lateral angles rectangular; lateral margin rounded; apical margin moderately concave. Elytra oval, widest at middle, 1.2x longer than wide, disc with dense, coarse punctures; moderately convex, epipleurae near lateral margins, located 9/10 distance between suture and lateral margins. Penis ( Figs 29C–29E View FIGURE 29 ) relatively wider, 7.3 longer than wide; parallel-sided; bifurcate at apical 1/5, apical processes directed mesally and apically; tectum small and apically tapering; slightly curved in lateral view, apices angular; ventral surface with deep and broad notch from apex to apical 2/5, apices angular; endophallic sclerite complex comprising one elongate sclerite at base, moderately curved in lateral view. Apical margin of abdominal ventrite V in female truncate and with a median notch. Gonocoxae ( Fig. 29F View FIGURE 29 ) separated and longitudinal, apices narrowly rounded and with dense setae. Ventrite VIII ( Fig. 29G View FIGURE 29 ) transverse, apical margin broadly rounded and slightly depressed at middle, with extremely dense setae; spiculum short. Receptacle of spermatheca ( Fig. 29H View FIGURE 29 ) as wide as pump, connected to pump; pump strongly curved; proximal spermathecal duct with broad, sclerotized area at base; membranous areas slender.
Variations. Specimens from Java usually possess two elytral spots that are continuous medially and transverse. In some specimens all three spots are continuous and transverse ( Fig. 28D View FIGURE 28 ). One specimen possesses reduced elytral spots ( Fig. 28E View FIGURE 28 ). Specimens from East Malaysia possess smaller punctures on the elytra than typical, a prominent notch at the apical margin of abdominal ventrite V and a membranous spiculum of the ventrite VIII in females. Specimens from Nias island lack black spots on the pronotum, possess yellow scutellum and only one pair of black spots near the apex of the elytra, similar to those of O. decempunctata , which was described as O. niasensis ( Fig. 28F View FIGURE 28 ).
Diagnosis. Adults of Oides duodecimpunctata are similar to those of O. coccinelloides , O. decempunctata , and O. maculosa in possessing small, black spots on the elytra arranged into three transverse rows. They differ from others in possessing one pair of lateral black spots on the pronotum (entirely yellowish brown pronotum in O. decempunctata ) and black scutellum (yellow scutellum in O. decempunctata and O. coccinelloides ), two pairs of black spots near apices of elytra (only one pair in O. decempunctata ; three pairs in O. maculosa ), and less convex elytra (epipleurae located at 9/10 distance between suture and lateral margins; strongly convex elytra in O. coccinelloides , epipleurae located at 3/5 between suture and lateral margins; moderately convex elytra in O. decempunctata , epipleurae located at 5/7 between suture and lateral margins). Some specimens possess reduced black spots on the pronotum and yellow scutellum. Moreover, specimens from populations on Nias Island possess a pattern of black spots similar to those of O. decempunctata . Aedeagi of male O. duodecimpunctata differs from others in possessing small and apically tapering tectum (lacking tectum in O. coccinelloides ; recurved tectum in O. decempunctata ; bifurcate and rounded tectum in O. maculosa ), deep and broad ventral notch (membranous apex in O. decempunctata ; deep and narrow ventral notch in O. coccinelloides ), and one elongate and parallel-sided endophallic sclerite (one large, hooked, erect sclerite in O. maculosa ; endophallic sclerites absent in O. decempunctata ; one small, hooked, erect endophallic sclerite in O. coccinelloides ).
