Distribution: Colombia and Venezuela to C Chile, Bolivia, Uruguay, and C Argentina; Hawaii ( USA); Guatemala and Mexico throughout the USA to S British Columbia, SE Mackenzie, Hudson Bay and S Quebec ( Canada); Galapagos Isls ( Ecuador); Bermuda; accidental on Cuba, Hispaniola, Iceland, and the Orkney Isls ( Scotland).
Conservation: U.S. ESA – Endangered as L. c. semotus. IUCN / SSC Action Plan (2001) – Not Evaluated as L. c. semotus; otherwise Lower Risk (lc).
Discussion: Subgenus Lasiurus , cinereus species group. Includes villosissimus and semotus; see Sanborn and Crespo (1957) and Morales and Bickham (1995). See Shump and Shump (1982 b).
