Type species: Ƒaricorhinus discognathoides Nichols & Pope, 1927 ; gender feminine.
Species of Altigena are distinguished from other Bangana s.l. by: postlabial groove continuous ( Fig. 3); snout strongly projecting; interior surface of lateral portion of upper lip smooth; mouth inferior, strongly arched; dorsal fin falcate, its distal edge strongly concave; 29–48 lateral line scales; 4–8 scale rows between lateral line and origin of dorsal fin.
The genus is known from the Chao Phraya to the Pearl River drainages. Species included in Yang et al.'s analysis are: A. tonkinensis (Pellegrin & Chevey, 1934) and A. lippa (Fowler, 1936) . Based on the above diagnosis additional species apparently belonging in this genus are: A. discognathoides , A. elegans (Kottelat, 1998) , A. sinkleri (Fowler, 1934) , A. wui (Zheng & Chen, 1983) , A. yunnanensis (Wu & Lin, in Wu, 1977) , A. zhui (Zheng & Chen, in Zheng, 1989) , and possibly B. binhluensis (Nguyen, in Nguyen & Ngo, 2001) , whose original description allows only guesses.
The type species of Vinalabeo Nguyen, Nguyen & Nguyen, 2016 is A. tonkinensis and this makes it a subjective junior synonym of Altigena .
