Discussion: Commonly regarded as a subfamily, sometimes even as a separate family; see Barabasch-Nikiforow (1975). Hutchinson (1974) concluded that Desmaninae and Talpidae were separated since the Eocene. Taxonomy of fossil and extant taxa reviewed by Rümke (1985).
