Material examined
Male holotype: Peru: Natucana [is probably Matucana], 7788 ft., 14.vi. [no year] [H.S.Parish] (in Museum of Comparative Zoology, pinned).
Diagnosis
The genitalia of Helicopsyche peruana are similar to those of Helicopsyche merida Botosaneanu & Flint, 1982 , Helicopsyche maculisternum Botosaneanu, 1993 , and Helicopsyche breviterga Flint, 1991 , in the strongly produced setal bases along the dorsal margin of the gonocoxite. Helicopsyche peruana can be easily separated from H. breviterga and H. maculisternum by the minute sternal process of abdominal segment VI. It differs from H. merida in the greater number of megasetae on the Xth tergum, and in dorsal view by the more slender Xth tergite apex. In addition, the basimesal lobe of H. peruana is more rounded than in both H. merida and H. maculisternum , and more developed than in H. breviterga .
Description
Male. Head: antenna with scape as long as eye diameter. Maxillary palps with distal joint slightly longer than proximal joint. Fore leg anterior spur about 4x longer than posterior spur. Wing venation unknown. VIth sternal process ( Fig. 1 View FIGURES 1 6 ) minute, triangular, covered by microtrichiae. Genitalia ( Figs 26 View FIGURES 1 6 ): segment IX, in lateral view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 6 ), with anterior lobe triangular, oriented anteriad, anterodorsal margin slightly convex; anteroventral margin broadly and shallowly concave; in dorsal view ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 6 ), with inner margin ovoid; in ventral view ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 6 ), with substraight, undulate posterior margin; lateral apodeme well developed, medially divided, anterior margin ending immediately below anterior lobe apex; tergal transverse apodeme absent; sternal transverse apodeme weak. Segment X, in lateral view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 6 ), oriented posteroventrad, substraight; dorsally slightly produced proximally; dorsal and ventral margins subparallel along their lengths, apex tapering dorsally; in dorsal view ( Fig. 3 View FIGURES 1 6 ), slightly narrowing along its length, apical part weakly notched; with about 14 megasetae in longitudinal row starting on distal half of segment, the posteriormost megaseta somewhat shorter than the others. Superior appendage ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 6 ) tubular, oriented dorsolaterad. Primary branch of gonocoxite, in lateral view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 6 ), generally triangular, with strongly undulate dorsal margin due to extended setal bases; apex produced posteriorly, rounded; central part of primary branch about 2x as broad as height of central part of Xth tergum ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 6 ); anterodorsal margin slightly sigmoid, smooth; posteroventral margin with small undulations associated with setal bases. Basimesal lobe of gonocoxite hidden by primary branch in lateral view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 6 ), with megasetae oriented dorsad; large, triangular in ventral view ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 6 ), with substraight median margins, smooth; with about 11 megasetae on dorsal surface. Basal plate, in lateral view ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 6 ), substraight, anterodorsal part slightly produced; in ventral view ( Fig. 4 View FIGURES 1 6 ) sharply triangular, apex pointed. Phallus ( Figs 56 View FIGURES 1 6 ), in lateral view ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 6 ), slightly curved along its length, dorsal margin slightly convex; ventral margin strongly concave; anterior 1/4 2x as broad as central part ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 6 ); in ventral view ( Fig. 6 View FIGURES 1 6 ); endotheca with long, strongly erect dorsal lobe; sperm duct undivided; posteroventrally strongly sclerotized.
