Subgenus Endectyon Topsent, 1920
Diagnosis. Arborescent growth form, with a compressed axial skeleton cored by stout choanosomal principal styles, oxeas, strongyles or anisostrongyles, and plumose extra-axial skeleton cored by long subectosomal auxiliary styles producing a hispid surface, surrounded by bundles of ectosomal auxiliary styles at the surface. Echinating acanthostyles are confined to outside the axial skeleton and have recurved (clavulate) hooks, with both ends spined or slightly subtylote with smooth bases, but lack any basal rhabd (from Hooper 2002, with our amendments in bold typeface).
