Hydropsyche newae species group

Fig. 203–206

Several attempts of grouping and naming the species of this group have been presented in literature. The various names assigned to the species of the H. nevae species group are listed below.

bifida View in CoL species group ( Ross 1944: 96)

nevae group ( Schmid 1961: 199)

penicillata group ( Schmid 1965: 137)

nevae group ( Botosaneanu 1970: 296)

silfvenii group ( Malicky 1977: 1–2)

subgenus Ceratopsyche Ross & Unzicker, 1977: 305 View in CoL , also used by Schefter, Wiggins & Unzicker 1986: 68. genus Ceratopsyche View in CoL ( Nielsen, 1981: 798; Schuster 1984: 339)

morosa View in CoL group (Schefter & Wiggins 1986: 2) replacement name for bifida View in CoL species group [ H. bifida View in CoL junior synonym of H. morosa Schefter & Unzicker View in CoL ]

newae species group ( Mey 1998d: 192)

annulata View in CoL species group ( Malicky & Chantaramongkol 2000: 804)

Below we revise the West Palaearctic, East Palaearctic and Oriental species and the Nearctic species are not treated here. The species in this groups is recognized by having: sinuate phallotheca; genital opening localized on the dorsal side, between the paired phallotremal sclerites; and the apex of the phallotheca extends beyond phallotremal sclerites, partially membranous and with spicules or membranous lobes. The species have phal- lotheca with membranous subapical dorsum and a modified endotheca surmounted by a pair of more or less fused heavily pigmented dark ball-like phallotremal sclerites. A pair of long, membranous endothecal processes arising just behind the dominating phallotremal sclerites. The apex of the endothecal process has sclerous tip, spicule or spine, sometimes replaced by rounded membranous spinose window in various positions, with sclerous point, spicule or spine. The lower anteroventral part of the endotheca fuses with apex of the phallotheca (enlarged phallobase). Three apicoventral lobules of endotheca are surrounded by, and embedded in a sclerous integument; each lobule is membranous and to some extent eversible, and with a cluster of pale, sclerous spicules at the ends. These lobules are sometimes fused into 1 or 2 large lobules inverted deeply into the sclerous apical portion of the endotheca .

More than 100 species belong to this species group and Malicky and Chantaramongkol (2000) suggested further division of the group based on the various shapes of the phallothecal basis. This idea is realised here and grouped below.

In all hydropsychine genera, and all Hydropsyche species groups, except in 3 clades established here in the newae group, the phallotheca is arciform ( Fig. 203). Like in many species of the angustipennis species group, many species have its ventrad curving basal part of the phallotheca simply bent, right or obtusely angled, and the longer terminal section is nearly straight, or undulating horizontally. This state is preserved in the nawae species clade. This shape of the phallotheca different in the Oriental species, all having enlarged and unusually differently bent phallotheca. There are intermediate species between various character states within the species group, especially numerous between columnata species clade with V-shaped phallotheca and the simulata species clade with U–shaped phallotheca, but the states are easily grouped in 4 clades ( Fig. 203–206). In the columnata species clade the horizontal and basal sections of the phallotheca bending in an acute angle compressing the basic arciform into a somehow inverse V-shaped configuration ( Fig. 204). A triangle bend is enlarged into an inverse U-shape basal section in the H. simulata species clade, and is even more bent into an almost closed O-shaped basal section in the H. serpentina species clade.
