Abacaria Mosely View in CoL View at ENA

Abacaria Mosely, 1941: 364 View in CoL , type species: Hydropsychodes fijiana Mosely, 1933: 20 , by original designation.

Type locality. Fiji .

The genus Abacaria belongs to the Hydropsyche genus cluster. The 14 known species populates eastern New Guinea and the Melanesian islands. Most species are easily distinguished from those in other genera by their forewings pattern of black with white markings, as well as by the loss of the proepisternal setal warts. These warts are present in a single species, Abacaria caledona Oláh & Johanson , from New Caledonia. The single underived primary character is (3) forewing crossvein m-cu running distad to crossvein cu. Derived primary characters are: (1) the absence of proepisternal seta warts; (2) preanal appendages reduced to setal warts or surfaces; (4) hind wing median cell open; (5) hind wing crossvein m-cu absent; (6) spur formula (0-1)44; and (7) hind wing with forks 2, 3 and 5. Females are more conservative than males by having more underived characters than found in the males, like in Abacaria fijiana which has female spur formula 244 and male spur formula 044. In other species the males have spur formula 144.
