Potamyia Banks View in CoL View at ENA
Potamyia Banks, 1900: 259 View in CoL . Type species: Macronema flavum Hagen, 1861: 285 View in CoL , by original designation. Synaptopsyche Ulmer, 1951 ; Malicky 1997a: 1034.
Small to medium-sized animals with yellow and brown colour, except the Potamyia ifanadiana species group from Madagascar that includes dark and large animals. Together with species in the genus Hydronema View in CoL , the species in this genus has similarities with those in Macronematinae View in CoL in that the antennae are elongate, with globular scape; the head is globular with bulging face and wide malar space. The species in the P. ifanadiana species group have modified preanal appendages, possibly representing a most primitive state of the primary generic characters together with (7) hind wing forks 1235 present. The species in Potamyia View in CoL are characterized by 5 derived primary generic characters: (2) proepisternal setal wart absent; (3) distance of forewing crossvein m-cu to crossvein cu is short; (4) the median cell in the hind wings is open; (5) the hind wing crossvein m-cu is absent; and (6) the spur formula is reduced to 044. Among the secondary generic characters the confluence of Cu2 and A 1 in the forewings is very pronounced and stable. These 2 veins meeting well before wing margin in all species. Sexual dimorphism is found the tibial spur formula, and deviations exist within the genus. For instance in Potamyia johansoni Oláh the male protibia has 1 preapical spur, and the female has 2 preapical spurs, although smaller preapical spur on the protibia, in spite of the absence of protibial spurs in other species of the genus.
