Cheumatopsyche mafana Oláh & Johanson , new species
Fig. 335–336
The description of this new species is based on females only. Pinned animals exhibit a remarkable white forewing pattern on dark brown, almost black background. The pattern is present in the denuded wing membrane, and is contrasted by white setae. The two patterns overlap not exactly; the pattern of denuded membrane is slightly smaller than the intact pattern being enlarged and even modified slightly by white setae. The exact species group position will be confirmed when it is associated with the male. However based on its size, as well as wing pattern, this species belongs to the Cheumatopsyche ampanga species group. According to the forewing pattern it is close to C. chirapali Oláh & Johanson , but having only 2 white patches on the forewing costa instead of 3 patches clearly visible on the denuded animals of C. chirapali stored over 50 years in alcohol.
Female. Body dark brown with white forewing pattern. Maxillary palp formula I-(III, IV)-II-V, segment V as long as sum of segments I–IV. Head dorsum dark chestnut brown, densely covered with setae, with 7 dark chestnut brown setal warts. Swollen setal wart absent on proepisternum. Setal wart present on each precoxale. Pretarsal claws symmetrical, not laterally flanked by setal bundle. Claws on mid- and hind-legs symmetrical. Spur fomula 244. Protibiae with posteroapical spur slightly smaller than anteroapical spur. Spot-reticulated, circular plaque characteristic at the Malagasy C. ranomafana and C. tiokalamkita females absent on membranous pleurae IV.
Wings. Forewing ( Fig. 335) membrane dark brown, with 3 large white patches, 2 on costa, one centrally near posterior wing margin. Forewing crossveins m-cu and cu separate by distance equal to length of 2 crossveins. Sc and R separate at costa. Cu2 and A1 separate along their length. Hind wing Sc and R meeting apically of crossvein r at a distance equal to twice crossvein lengths. Crossvein r located basally of s at distance equal to length of crossvein. Fork 1 absent. Forewing length 6.8 mm.
Female genitalia ( Fig. 336). Anteroventral corner partly covered by sternum VIII. Abdomen tapering slightly more in lateral than in dorsal and ventral view, sagittally narrowing posteriorly. Tergum VIII nearly triangular with produced anterolateral lobes; less developed ventrocaudal lobes covered by 4–5 stiff setae. Wide, shallow sinuate mesal dorsocaudal incision visible in dorsal view. Tergal surface smooth, produced, provided by tiny, closely set microtrichiae; setae absent, except on ventrocaudal corners. Tergite VIII produced; with laterad sutures separating sclerotized pleurotergum anteroventrally. Pleurosternum ( sensu Denning 1943 ), or posterolateral apodeme ( sensu Schefter & Ward 2002 ) narrow, entirely sclerotized, located anteriorly, parallel-sided, fusing obliquely to dorsal margins of each sternum VIII, separated by well-developed suture on each side. Lobe on sclerotized apical corners and lobe on apicodorsal corners of sternite VIII, together with bilobed projection on posterior margin, forming third chelum. Sternum VIII rounded, nearly quadrangular, with deep excision on distal margin in lateral view. Freely flanking ventrocaudal, lobe-like corners, the ventral plate ( sensu Nielsen 1980 ), or lateral plate ( sensu Denning 1943 ) forming narrow, deep, mesal incision visible in ventral view; almost dividing sternum into 2 lateral plates connected anteriorly on antecosta. Lobe-like corners and distal margin covered by long, stiff setae flanking and protecting fused, membranous, sternal portion of segment IX. Internal surface scarcely setose. Setose ventrocaudal lobes forming third support of copulation chelum of segment VIII. Ventrocaudal lobes and posterior half of sternum VIII scarcely covered by short setae, basal part devoid of setae. Tergum IX elongated vertically in lateral view, oriented obliquely to main axis of abdomen, slightly narrowing ventrad with small lateral lobe on ventrodistal corners of segment. Narrow antecosta present on anterior margin, with nearly invisible acrotergite on dorsum. Dorsal margin rounded in lateral and dorsal view. Posterodorsal margin of segment IX with small, rim-like margins on both sides, with 3 long, stiff, separate setae, corresponding to almost brush-like group of 4–5 usually closely set setae on both sides of dorsocaudal margin in most member of female hydropsychines. Three stiff, long setae accompanying smaller setae. Sclerotized ridge running along central part of tergum IX from central part of dorsum to one-third the length of segment; producing long, triangular hook, the clasper receptacle covers, delineating small, depressed, distal cavity of clasper grooves. Clasper grooves forming small clasper areas as depression on apicodorsal corner of tergum IX. Clasper receptacles small, forming sinuous cavity covering long triangular lobe. Weakly marked suture delineating less pigmented, short tergum X present along distal margin of tergite IX. Tergum X representing body of upper lip of atrium ( sensu Nielsen 1980 ) forming pair of foliate, flat lobes covered with short setae nested on large, wart-like alveoli, and tridactylate short lobes; dorsal and ventral processes larger, middle process (cercus sensu Nielsen 1980 ), digitate, slender, armed with 2 apical setae. Dorsal and ventral processes blunt, with tiny, peg-like setae on dome-like alveolar membranes in deep alveoli, visible only at high magnification. Sclerotized, setose lobes concealed under foliate, principal setose lobes of tergite X; foliate, small, flat; may represent the rudimentary sternal lobes (lateral tergal plate sensu Denning 1943 ). Lobes connected by smooth, membranous, triangular, median body surrounding anovaginal dorsal part of opening, connected basally to lower lip. Lower lip of atrium ( sensu Nielsen 1980 ), or vulvar scale ( sensu Schmid 1998 ), representing sternal portions of segment IX, visible as distended, bag-like, structure with narrow, sclerotized plate. Vaginal apparatus in cleared abdomen mostly membranous. Slightly sclerotized, sinuate, thin, trip connecting lower lip with sclerotized tergum of segment IX and pair of slightly sclerotized plates at end, deep under cover of sternum VIIII.
Holotype female: MADAGASCAR: Fianarantsoa Province, 7 km W Ranomafana , 900 m, Malaise trap across stream, montane rainforest, 8–13.iii.1990 [W.E. Steiner] - ( NMNH, pinned).
Paratypes: same data as holotype - 1 female ( NMNH) ; same data as holotype, except 1100 m, 22– 31.x.1988 - 1 female ( OPC) ; same data as holotype, except 20–31.i.1990 - 2 females ( NMNH) .
Etymology. mafana , name derived from the name of the type locality, Ranomafana.
Remarks. For proper illustration of the genitalias egments IX and X were slightly extruded with pincers from partial coverage of segment VIII
