New records — Serbia, Vlasina, village Milovanci, pond, 42.6786° N, 22.3602° E, 27 Jun. 2022, leg. Pešić, Jovanović & Manović 1♂ (sequenced; Table 1) GoogleMaps .
Remarks — The sequenced specimen from Serbia cluster within ACS0212. The latter BIN, in addition to specimen from Serbia, grouped a sequences retrived from the specimens from the Neherlands, Türkiye and Norway. New for Serbia.
Published records from Balkan countries — Macedonia: Đorđević (1906), Stanković (1931), Georgiev (1957), Smit & Pešić (2004); Bulgaria: “ A. sp. ? bruzelii “ K. Viets (1940), “ A. sp. ?bruzelii “ Valkanov (1957), Petrova (1971); Greece: Smit et al. (2000).
Distribution — Palaearctic.
Discussion
Our study provides an updated checklist of Serbian water mites. The checklist includes 104 species in 18 families and 32 genera. The most species rich family was Hygrobatidae with 14 species (13.5%), followed by Arrenuridae with 13 species (12.5%), Pionidae with 11 species (10.6%), Torrenticolidae with 9 species (8.7%), and Aturidae and Hydryphantidae with 8 species (7.7%) each. Some families were rare, such as Acherontacaridae , Limnocharidae and Frontipodopsidae , represented by a single species each.
Our study revealed that only 22.1% (23 species with 28 BINs) of the Serbian water mites having sequences collected in Serbia were represented in BOLD. Three of the species from the checklist were represented by multiple BINs: Monatractides madritensis (AED3803, AEF2866), Mideopsis roztoczensis (AEA2936, ACI1492, AEN6785), and Lebertia porosa (ACQ9049, ACS0974, ACP5319). The latter species represents a species complex. Recently, Lebertia porosa was redefined by Tyuokosova et al. (2022) based on specimens from the type locality that were shown to belong molecularly to ACQ9049. Specimens of Lebertia porosa collected in the River Nišava at the mouth of Gabrovački stream (see Table 1) cluster within ACS0974, which includes porosa -like specimens from different parts of Europe, except Fennoscandia (available in BOLD). Pešić et al. (in prep.) pointed that the taxonomic status of L. porosa -like species of ACS0974 needs to be clarified by resolving the taxonomic status of numerous species listed as synonyms in Gerecke (2009). We detected two additional BIN’s within Serbian Lebertia porosa -like specimens. One specimen (SEPTA049-21; Pešić et al. 2021) from Western Serbia (Zlatibor, Crni Rzav) clusters within ACQ9049, while one specimen from the Katušnica river (SEPTA057-21; Pešić et al. 2021) clusters within ACP5319, which includes porosa - like specimens from Germany and Norway provisionally assigned by Tyukosova et al. (2022) to L. porosa aggr. sp. A. As emphasized by Gerecke et al. (2022), a more extensive study of L. porosa complex is needed to establish a stable taxonomy for this group.
In Mideopsis roztoczensis there were three BINs, ACI1492 shared with Norway, Montenegro, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Russia, AEN6785 shared with Norway and Turkey, and AEA2936 shared with Germany and Belgium, two of these BIN’s (ACI1492 and AEN6785) were found at the same site at Katušnica river river in Western Serbia (see Pešić et al. 2023 for a discussion). Two BINs were detected within Monatractides madritensis : AED3803 shared with Montenegro, Italy and Portugal and AEF2866 shared with Romania. The p-distance between these two BINs was estimated at 3.85%.
The number of water mite species known for Serbia is significantly lower compared to other Balkan countries. For example, 219 species are known for Bulgaria, 167 for the Republic of North Macedonia while Montenegro hosted 193 water mite species ( Pešić et al. 2018). Therefore, the current number of water mites is far below the number expected and further faunistic studies should be intensified in order to obtain a realistic assessment of the diversity of this group in Serbia.
