Taxonomic synonym: Polysiphonia angustissima Kützing : Martens 1871a, p. 172; Prain 1905, p. 331; Biswas 1926, p.35, Pl. X, fig. 26, 1949 a, p.104; Biswas 1932a, p. 193, Pl. 31, figs 32–37. Biswas 1949, p. 104; Chacko et al. 1953, p.8.
Distribution in India: Odisha (Chilka Lake, also spelled Chilika Lake, Kalijai, Pathara and Satpara occurring probably throughout the year); Tamil Nadu (Pulicat lake).
Notes: Following Silva et al. (1996) and Guiry & Guiry (2017), we consider the records of Polysiphonia angustissima Kützing in India as synonyms of P. subtilisissima . Desikachary et al. (1998), however, based on the number of pericentral cells ( P. subtilissima with 4 ecorticate pericentral cells and P. angustissima with 10 to 20 pericentral cells) treated these two species separately. Ott (2009, p. 669) analyzed in detail several of the relatively less known, but truly freshwater, records of P. subtilissima in U.S.A. and in a freshwater stream in Jamaica, Central America. Lam et al. (2013) showed, based on DNA sequence analysis, that the freshwater and marine records of P. subtilisissima in North America and Europe are identical and are referable to the same species. Polysiphonia subtilissima is reported mostly from marine, estuarine lakes and mangrove habitats (see Guiry & Guiry 2017). Systematics of some species of Polysiphonia in Thanwein river mouth of Myanmar was studied by Jar-San & Soe-Htun (2015).
