The variety was erected by Von Lendenfeld for Thiele’s nominotypical variety of Geodia hilgendorfi Thiele (1898: 8 View in CoL , pl. 1 fig. 4, pl. 6 figs. 4a–h). As Thiele described the var. granosa View in CoL of G. hilgendorfi View in CoL he automatically created the nominotypical variety without formally naming it. The nominotypical variety has to be named identical to the species name (ICZN art. 47.1), in the present case G. hilgendorfi var. hilgendorfi View in CoL . Von Lendenfeld named it var. typica View in CoL , but this becomes a junior synonym of the species Geodia hilgendorfi Thiele, 1898 View in CoL .
