Discussion: Equalivalent to the 2n=46 cytotype of Berry and Baker (1972) and Lee and Baker (1987), shown by mitochondrial DNA analysis to be phylogenetically separate from the 2n=42 cytotype of these authors ( DeWalt et al., 1993 a), which is herein referred to as C. goldmani . Largely coincides to the " excelsus subspecies-group" of Russell (1968 b), but contains some taxa in his " subnubilis subspecies-group" (see Davidow-Henry et al., 1989, Mammalian Species No. 338). However, allocations of some taxa belonging to Russell’s " subnubilus group" to either castanops or goldmani need verification by karytoypic and other character analyses. Grouped with merriami in the castanops species-group by Russell (1968 b). Subspecies listed above are those of Davidow-Henry et al. (1989), except as revised by Hollander (1990) for those in the USA.
