An Afrotropical species, all of whose parasitic stages are usually found on Artiodactyla : Bovidae . All parasitic stages have been collected from Mammalia (several orders), while nymphs and larvae have been recovered from Lagomorpha : Leporidae , and Macroscelidea : Macroscelididae . Rhipicephalus muehlensi is a very rare parasite of humans.

Note: Walker et al. (2000) concluded that several published records of Rhipicephalus muehlensi are, in fact, misidentifications. These authors claim that Rhipicephalus muehlensi is not present in Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda; therefore, the redescriptions of Rhipicephalus muehlensi in Elbl and Anastos (1966c) , who analyzed the tick species found in those three countries, are not included in the above lists.
