An Afrotropical species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla : Bovidae , while larvae and nymphs are commonly recovered from Rodentia : Muridae . Adult ticks have also been recovered from Mammalia (several orders), with rare records from Testudines : Testudinidae , Passeriformes : Ploceidae , and Struthioniformes : Struthionidae ; immature stages have been collected from Lagomorpha : Leporidae , Macroscelidea : Macroscelididae , Rodentia : Gliridae and Hystricidae , Galliformes : Numididae and Phasianidae , and Passeriformes : Muscicapidae and Pycnonotidae . Rhipicephalus gertrudae is a sporadic parasite of humans.

Note: Horak et al. (2018) emphasized the difficulties involved in morphologically separating the larvae and nymphs of Rhipicephalus follis , Rhipicephalus gertrudae , Rhipicephalus simus and Rhipicephalus tricuspis , preferring instead to identify such specimens as members of the Rhipicephalus gertrudae group.
