Note: Guglielmone et al. (2014) stated that records and descriptions of Haemaphysalis papuana before Trapido et al. (1964b) are taxonomically uncertain, but the redescription of this species in Krijgsman and Ponto (1932) is treated as valid here. Camicas et al. (1998) list the larva of Haemaphysalis papuana as undescribed, but its description in Kadarsan (1971) is valid. Trapido et al. (1964b), in discussing Haemaphysalis papuana papuana and Haemaphysalis papuana kinneari , state that the description of the nymph of Haemaphysalis papuana in Nuttall and Warburton (1915) corresponds to another species, and the description of the larva by the same authors is questionable; therefore, Trapido et al. (1964b) did not endorse the diagnosis of Trapido et al. (1964a), who treated the larva and nymph of Haemaphysalis papuana in Nuttall and Warburton (1915) as Haemaphysalis papuana kinneari . See also Haemaphysalis hirsuta , Haemaphysalis kinneari and Haemaphysalis susphilippensis for their confusion with Haemaphysalis papuana .
