A Nearctic species, all of whose parasitic stages are usually found on Mammalia (several orders); rarely adults and nymphs have been found on Galliformes : Phasianidae . Dermacentor andersoni is a very frequent parasite of humans.

Note: Dermacentor andersoni has been misidentified on several occasions and at localities around the world (Guglielmone et al. 2014, 2015, Guzmán-Cornejo et al. 2016). Note: Teng and Jiang (1991) and Kolonin (2009) treat Dermacentor asper as a synonym of Dermacentor sinicus Schulze, 1931 , but it is regarded as provisionally valid in Guglielmone et al. (2014, 2015).
