A Nearctic species, but with a few records from the Neotropical Region, whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla (several families), Carnivora (several families), and Perissodactyla : Equidae ; nymphs and larvae are commonly recovered from Rodentia (several families). All parasitic stages have also been collected from Mammalia (several orders) and less often from Galliformes : Phasianidae ; immature stages have been found on Caprimulgiformes: Apodidae , Passeriformes (several families), and Squamata : Agamidae . Dermacentor variabilis is a very frequent parasite of humans.
