Type species: Boydaia philomachi Fain, 1956 by original designation.
Diagnosis. Palps with 2 segments. Hypostome with 2 pairs of setae. Propodonotal shield absent. Propodonotal region with 4 pairs of setae (ve and se absent). Hysteronotal region with 5 pairs of setae (h2 absent). Agenital series with 2–3 pairs of setae. Genital series with 3 pairs of setae. Pseudanal series with 2 pairs of setae. Setae 1a, 3a and 4a present. Number of leg setae: coxae 2–1–1–1(0), trochanters 1–1–0–0, femora 5(4)–4–3–2, genua 4–4–3–3, tibiae 5–3–3–3. Setae situated in anterior part of tarsi I–IV normally developed.
Remarks. Members of this genus are associated with birds of the orders: Charadriiformes, Cuculiformes , and Podicipediformes, and recorded in the Afrotropical, Australian, Oriental, Nearctic, and Neotropical regions ( Fain 1956a, c, 1961b, 1963d, 1964b; Clark 1964; Fain & Aitken 1968; Domrow 1969, 1991; Fain & Hyland 1970, 1975; Pence 1973a; Zabludovskaya 1998; Knee & Galloway 2016). The Afrotropical fauna includes two of the four described species: NeObOydaia galachrysiae Fain, 1961 and N. philOmachi (Fain, 1956) .
