Portulaca oleracea Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 445. 1753.
“Habitat in Europa australi, India, Ins. Ascensionis, America.” RCN: 3458.
Lectotype (Geesink in Blumea 17: 292. 1969): Löfling s.n., Herb. Linn. No. 625.1 (LINN).
Generitype of Portulaca Linnaeus (vide Green, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 157. 1929).
Current name: Portulaca oleracea L. subsp. oleracea (Portulacaceae).
Note: Geesink stated “T[ype]: LINN (photograph seen)” and as the only sheet he could have intended is 625.1 (LINN), and it is original material for the name, this choice is accepted here. Danin & al. (in Israel J. Bot. 27: 196. 1978), however, stated “the lectotype should be chosen from the Hortus Siccus Cliffortianus material in the British Museum (Natural History!)”, and applied their infraspecific nomenclature accordingly. They identified ( l.c.: 198) the LINN material (accepted here as the type) with subsp. stellata Danin & Baker. Most recent authors appear to accept Geesink’s choice of type but have adopted a broad species concept.
