Type species: Proterochampsa barrionuevoi Reig, 1959 .
Diagnosis: Trotteyn et al. (2013) defined Proterochampsa as an archosauriform genus with the following combination of features (autapomorphies are marked by an asterisk*): temporal surface of skull depressed; external nares placed close to the anterior tip of the snout and dorsally oriented; antorbital fenestra, orbits and supratemporal fenestra dorsally oriented; notably developed ornamentation composed of nodular crests on the skull and mandibles*; exclusion of jugal from the suborbital fenestra by the maxilla–ectopterygoid contact; premaxilla forming half of the border of the external nares*; nasals extended anteriorly along the medial border of the external nares between the premaxillary dorsal processes.
