12. PACHYBRACHIS HUACHUCA Barney , new species zoobank.org/ urn:lsid:zoobank.org:act:36C48ED0-83A6-4037-88E4-08A1DE2DE95A ( Figs. 12 View Fig , 14B View Fig )

Holotype. Male labeled “Sunnyside Canyon/ Huachuca Mts. /Ariz. VII – 9 – 40/ D. E. Hardy [printed, white paper]//[circular blue disc signifying dissection by RJB]// HOLOTYPE / Pachybrachis / huachuca Barney /R. J. Barney 2021 [printed, red paper]”. Deposited in MCZ. The specimen is point-mounted with the genitalia affixed to the point. It is in excellent condition with all appendages intact.

Paratypes. One specimen (1♂) is labeled “ PARATYPE / Pachybrachis / huachuca Barney /R. J. Barney 2021 [printed, yellow paper]” .

Description. Male. Large, yellow with brown maculae ( Fig. 12 View Fig ); L = 3.73–4.00 mm (mean = 3.87 mm, n = 2); W = 1.96–2.16 mm (mean = 2.05 mm, n = 2); L/W = 1.86–1.90 (mean = 1.88, n = 2). Head: Not wider than thoracic apex, HW = 1.37–1.44 mm (mean = 1.40 mm, n = 2); eyes widely separated, without ocular lines, IOD = 0.35–0.47 mm (mean = 0.42 mm, n = 2); IOD/HW = 0.26–0.33 (mean = 0.29, n = 2); face yellow with brown macula descending from the vertex and between the upper lobes of eyes, punctation dense in dark areas, antennae progressing from yellow to brown, not reaching elytral declivity. Pronotum: Yellow with reduced M-shaped brown macula, densely punctate, less so at margins and median line, strongly narrowed apically; PL = 1.25–1.34 mm (mean = 1.29 mm, n = 2); PW = 1.68–1.83 mm (mean = 1.76 mm, n = 2); PL/ PW = 0.73–0.74 (mean = 0.74, n = 2). Elytra: Yellow with prominent brown maculae on each elytron prior to declivity, thus appearing as a trans-elytral stripe, densely punctate in baso-sutural area, striae irregular. Pygidium: Brown with 2 oval conjoined yellow spots. Venter: Brown with yellow side and apical margins. Legs: Yellow with brown spots, front claws of male greatly enlarged. Genitalia: Median lobe in en-face view shows large, oval OS, with a projecting, grooved terminus, bounded on each side by setal-covered extensions of the DEO, ALM with large wisps. The lateral view reveals that apical third of the median lobe is flexed backwards at a 45 ° angle at the wisps insertion at the ALA.A large, rounded keel, projecting from the base to the initiation of the wisps. A sub view of the median lobe shows that the keel has a fissura or split at the most extended point. Two males from Arizona were dissected.

Etymology. This species is named for the Huachuca Mountains, a location well known to beetle collectors, where the holotype was found.

Remarks. Externally, P. cylindricus , P. huachuca , and P. ashfork are nearly identical; however, their aedeagal median lobes are readily separable. Pachybrachis huachuca has a very similar median lobe to P. cylindricus , but P. huachuca has the median lobe flexed backwards at a 45 ° angle, and the keel has a fissura or split at the most extended point.

Distribution. Specimens were only found in Arizona ( Fig. 14B View Fig ).

Specimens Examined. USA: ARIZONA: Cochise Co., Sunnyside, Huachuca Mts. , 9.vii.1940, D. E. Hardy [1♂, HOLOTYPE, SEMC]; Santa Cruz Co. , Papago Springs, 15.v.1990, N. K. and R. S. Miller [1♂, BYUC] .
