Distribution and remarks: occurs in the Senegal, the Niger (and Benue), Chad basin, Volta, Ogun, Oshun, Bia, Comoe, Me, Bandama, Boubo and Sassandra. Elsewhere it is known from the Ubangui, Uele, and Ituri ( Congo), Lake Albert, Nile, Lake Turkana and the Jordan basin. It has been introduced into several hydrographic basins but absent natively form Lower Guinea. Might be introduced in Gabon for aquaculture.
