Syntypes: Seven samples near the Debegeni water falls as specified in Cholnoky (1954): “Fundorte 3, 4, 5 (NS), 7, 9 (NS), 10 (NS), 15 (NS)”.

Note: Cholnoky (1954) published Achnanthes kraeuselii as a new species from Transvaal (Africa). The German description is in accordance with Art. 44.1 (McNeill et al. 2006). Cholnoky cited seven collections which serve as syntypes. When Cholnoky (1956) worked on diatoms from Natal (Africa), he revisited his findings in comparison with Hustedt’s species. Cholnoky (1956) gave his species a new rank as variety and combined it with Achnanthes subhudsonis Hust. ; in addition he provided diagnostic features for Hustedt’s nominate variety Achnanthes subhudsonis Hust. var. subhudsonis . Achnanthes subhudsonis Hust. in Hedwigia 63: 144, fig. 9–12. 1921, as lectotypified by Simonsen (1987), was recombined with Achnanthidium as Achnanthidium subhudsonis H.Kobayasi in Kobayasi et al., Atlas of Japanese Diatoms 1: 129. 2006.
