Etymology. The name is a combination of Citr – (L. citer, lying near, near, close) and – originis (L. originis, source, beginning) in reference to the proximal origin of the fore wing cubitus anterior and median veins 3 + 4 of the only known species of the genus. The genus is feminine.

Description. Small sized cicada (body length 15.35–16.30 mm, wingspan 40.30–42.75 mm). Head not as wide as mesonotum, eyes round, not extending laterally as wide as lateral pronotum or pronotal collar lateral angle, anterolateral vertex narrower than eye, supra-antennal plate reaching about half distance to eye, vertex at area of ocelli about as long as frons, lateral ocelli about same distance from each other as to eyes, higher than median ocellus in frontal view, epicranial suture widening posterior to lateral ocelli, anterior postclypeus triangularly extended, deep central sulcus ventrally, visible as indentation on apex when viewed from dorsal side, dorsal postclypeus not as long as dorsal vertex, slightly wider than long, postclypeus flattened ventrally with medial ridge on either side of deep sulcus, rostrum reaching middle trochanters. Pronotum not as long as mesonotum anterior to cruciform elevation, lateral surfaces approximately parallel, paranota present but angled ventrally, dorsal pronotal collar width much less than diameter of eye, lateral angles of pronotal collar ampliated with curved apex, wider than transverse pronotal collar, mesonotum lacking stridulatory apparati, cruciform elevation smoothly arched posteriorly, central dome wid- er than long. Dorsal metanotum exposed, metanotum extends laterally beyond wing groove. Fore femora with three spines, large primary and secondary spines elevated from femur, tarsi three-segmented, meracanthus, large with triangular terminus, extending beyond posterior opercular margin to middle of male sternite II. Male operculum completely encapsulating meracanthus, S-shaped, not covering tympanal cavity, medial margins well separated. Fore wings and hind wing hyaline with eight and five apical cells respectively, fore wings 2.40–2.58X longer than broad, pterostigma absent, infuscation absent. Fore wing basal cell about three times longer than broad, subrectangular, ulnar cells 1 and 2 parallel, about the same size, ulnar cell 3 more than twice as large expanding to widest point at divergence of median vein 1 + 2, medial cell elongated reaching distally almost to distal apical cell 8, apical cell 8 longest of apical cells, costal vein bowed, subcostal vein angled to margin distal to costal vein, additional small cell formed distal to radial cell where radius anterior and radius posterior diverge at node, median vein 3 + 4 arises just distal to arculus, base of cubitus anterior arising near proximal base of basal cell, cubitus anterior and anal vein 1 unfused, radial and radiomedial crossveins parallel, obliquely angled, medial and mediocubital crossveins sinuate intersecting veins at approximate right angle, mediocubital crossvein intersects cubitus anterior 1 so that distal portion is shortest. Hind wing without infuscation, base of median and radius posterior veins unfused, width of distal cubital cell 1 about as wide as distal cubital cell 2, anal cell 3 about half length of anal cell 2, anal vein 3 curving to distal terminus. Abdomen length greater than distance from anterior postclypeus to posterior cruciform elevation, male abdomen fusiform, abdominal tergites 2–6 about the same length, abdomen begins narrowing posteriorly to genitalia at tergite 5 or 6, epipleurites reflexed to ventral surface without V-shaped kink. Timbal organ absent, timbal cover or turned-back rim absent, timbal exposed, timbal extending below wing base, tympana not concealed by opercula. Male sternite abdominal VIII V-shaped when viewed from posterior with rounded posterior margin. Pygofer distal shoulder undeveloped, smoothly curved, dorsal beak small, pointed, not reaching posterior distal shoulder, pygofer upper lobe absent, pygofer basal lobe well-developed extending more than half pygofer length with triangular apex, adpressed to lateral pygofer, median uncus lobe undivided, dominating uncus, not retractable within pygofer, broad, parallel sides at base tapering to rounded posterior margin, claspers absent.

Measurements (mm). Length of body: 15.35–16.30; length of fore wing: 17.60–18.75; width of fore wing: 6.85–7.55; length of head: 2.50–2.75; width of head including eyes: 4.95–5.10; width of pronotum including suprahumeral plates: 5.50–6.20; width of mesonotum: 5.00–5.30.

Diagnosis. Citroriginis n. gen. is the only genus currently known for the tribe. Species of Citroriginis n. gen. can be distinguished from other Tibicininae by the lack of timbal organs in the male, the origin positions of the fore wing cubitus anterior and median vein 3 + 4, ulnar cells 1 and 2 are parallel and about the same size, ulnar cell 3 is more than twice as large as ulnar cells 1 and 2 expanding to widest point at divergence of median vein 1 + 2, and the medial cell elongated reaching distally almost to distal apical cell 8.

Distribution. The only known species of the genus is endemic to the Araucanía Region of central Chile.
