Genus Coryphophthalmus Verhoeff, 1910

Type species: Coryphophthalmus banaticus Verhoeff, 1910

Diagnosis. Paired ocelli submedian, subtriangular to pyriform, with white rim. The angle between the axis along the line of contact of compound eyes and the transverse axis of the paired ocellus less than 90°. Urocoxites II–IV or II–V with 2 + 2 exsertile vesicles. Urosternites acutely angled. Fore femora of male without sensorial fields. Ovipositor long, thin, without fossorial spines and long setae.

Description. Body length 6.5–15 mm. Hypodermal pigment on head, thorax, coxae, distal part of abdomen, or absent. Antennal length longer, shorter or equal to body length. Cercus with one or two supporting apical spikes. Compound eyes black, dark, dark brown or rarely bicolored, slightly widened, rounded or elongated. Paired ocelli submedian, subtriangular to pyriform, dark brown, brown or light brown with white rim. The angle between the axis along the line of contact of compound eyes and the transverse axis of the paired ocellus less than 90°. Mandibles with four, rarely three typical teeth. Coxal stylets present on middle and hind legs. Fore femora of male without sensorial fields. Pretarsus without empodial claw. Between claws of pretarsus an apically rounded semi-ellipsoid protrusion with an oval shallow-humped support platform. Spine-like setae on the ventral surface of tarsus absent or present. Urocoxites II–IV or II–V with 2 + 2 exsertile vesicles. Urosternites acutely angled. Parameres on urite IX only, clearly pseudosegmented, with 1 + 5–8 divisions, length equal to or slightly shorter or longer than penis. Male genitalia completely covered by the ninth urocoxites. Ovipositor long, thin, attaining apex of stylets IX, or slightly longer or shorter. Gonapophyses without long, thin setae.

Two described subgenera and 30 species ( Table 1 ).
