Protohermes axillatus Navás View in CoL

( Fig. 16 View FIGURE 16 )

Protohermes axillatus Navás, 1932 View in CoL . Brotéria Cienc. Nat. 1: 148. Type locality: Vietnam (Chapa).

Distribution. Vietnam (Lao Cai Prov.).

Remarks. This species was originally described by Navás (1932) based on a single female specimen from Vietnam. The type locality ‘Chapa’ is the current Sa Pa in Lao Cai Province. The type was mentioned to be deposited in the Navás’ collection in the original description, which was moved to the Museo de Zoología in Barcelona. Unfortunately, the type of this species is not presented in the neuropteran collection of Museo de Zoología in Barcelona after a kind checking by Dr. V. Monserrat in this year and is probably destroyed or lost (personal communication). According to the original description and illustration, this species is likely to be a member of the Protohermes davidi group ( Liu & Yang 2006a), on the basis of its well developed post-ocular spine and immaculate wings. Considering the different prothoracic markings and the disjunct distribution, this species can be distinguished from the known species of the P. davidi group. Its validity and taxonomic status will only be clarified when additional specimens become available.
