Type locality. Parque Estadual da Ilha Grande , Angra dos Reis (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) . 23.151° S, 44.188° W, 666 m.
Etymology. Insularis is an adjective and means ‘ in island ’ in Latin. It is a reference to the species ’ occurrence on the Ilha Grande. Name in apposition.
Diagnosis. Antennomere IX with separate branches ( Figures 1a, b View Figure 1 and 2c View Figure 2 ). Eyes occupying 1/2 of head width, in lateral view ( Figure 1d View Figure 1 ). Vertex occupying 1/2 of head in dorsal view ( Figure 1e View Figure 1 ). Elytron reaching the anterior margin of the third abdominal segment ( Figure 1a and b View Figure 1 ).
Description, male
Measurements (n = 7). Total length: 4.4 – 4.85 mm (avg. 4.6 mm). Head length: 0.54 – 0.64 mm (avg. 0.59 mm). Head width: 0.61 – 0.67 mm (avg. 0.64 mm). Pronotum length: 0.53 – 0.61 mm (avg. 0.56 mm). Pronotum maximum length: 0.5 – 0.55 mm (avg. 0.53 mm). Elytron length: 1.38 – 1.55 mm (avg. 1.47 mm). Elytron maximum width: 0.37 – 0.41 mm (avg. 0.39 mm). Elytral spot length: 0.3 mm.
Morphology. Head wider than long. Eyes occupying 1/2 of head width, in lateral view ( Figure 1d View Figure 1 ). Vertex occupying 1/2 of head in dorsal view ( Figure 1e View Figure 1 ). Antennomere IX with separate branches ( Figures 1a, b View Figure 1 and 2c View Figure 2 ). Apical maxillary palpomere 3.5× longer than subapical ( Figure 1d View Figure 1 ). Elytron 3.5 to 4× longer than wide ( Figure 1a View Figure 1 ), reaching the anterior margin of the third abdominal segment ( Figure 1a, b View Figure 1 ).
Colouration. Body overall light brown, with several dark brown regions. Pronotum dark brown to brown, with apical region lighter. Wing venation black to light brown. Elytron
almost black to dark brown, apex white to pale yellow, with apical spot occupying the apical 1/5 of the elytron.
Immatures and females. Unknown.
Biology and distribution. Akamboja insularis sp. nov. seems to occur only during the spring and summer of the southern hemisphere, from September to January. It inhabits high altitudinal areas of Ilha Grande, on Angra dos Reis, in Rio de Janeiro State, from 660 to 810 m. It occurs in the dense ombrophilous forest, which has high humidity in the entire year ( Veloso et al. 1991).
Remarks. This species can be easily separated from all other Akamboja species by the separated branches of the antennomere IX ( Figures 1 a – c View Figure 1 and 2c View Figure 2 ). In addition, this new species can be separated from Akamboja minimum , A. monteirorum and A. cleidae by the dark brown pronotum, which is light brown in those three species. The new species resembles A. tenebrae and A. caparaoensis in the dark brown pronotum, but can be separated from A. tenebrae by the smaller vertex (1/2 of the head width in A. insularis sp. nov. and 3/ 5 in A. tenebrae ), and from A. caparaoensis by the lateral region of the head posterior to eyes (sparsely setose in A. insularis sp. nov. and densely setose in A. caparaoensis ).

Type locality. Teresópolis, on the Serra dos Órgãos ( Brazil) .
Previous known distribution. Teresópolis, on the Serra dos Órgãos, in the Serra do Mar mountain range, from 250 to 860 m, and in the Tijuca Massif, around 800 m ( Roza et al. 2017).
Updated distribution. Teresópolis, on the Serra dos Órgãos, in the Serra do Mar mountain range, from 250 to 860 m, Tijuca Massif, around 800 m, and Ilha Grande, on Angra dos Reis, from 330 to 860 m.
Seasonality. This species seems to occur between August and March.
