We regard this as an incorrect subsequent spelling for Lacerta and not as a new name, because it differed only in its ending, and referred to the same animals as Lacerta . In other words, we see a very low likelyhood that Garsault intended to establish a second name next to Lacerta , for a system in which both names Lacerta and Lacertus should be used for different taxa. It seems more likely that Garsault did not know which spelling should be used, as there are no constraints suggesting that Garsault knew Linnaeus' 1758 work and that this work would some day be regarded as decisive for the correct spellings in the binominal nomenclature. Garsault 1764 seems to have applied binominal nomenclature consistently without having known Linnaeus' 1758 work.
