Lightfootiella (Lightfoot) Hašler, Pentecost, Jahodářová, Dvořák & Poulíčková , gen. nov.
Thallus macroscopic forming thick mucilaginous layers up to 1cm in thickness. Thalli appear dark red in colour often with an irregular rope-like morphology, weakly attached or loose-lying on the substratum. Colonies microscopic, spherical, hemispherical or irregularly lobate. Mucilage envelopes wide, consisting of distinct layers internally and often an external layer of amorphous mucilage. Colony disintegrates into sub-colonies after gelatinization of layered envelopes. Cells spherical, hemispherical, oval. Cells grow up to original shape and size after colony disintegration. Resting cells not observed. Reproduction by binary fission in three planes.
Etymology: the generic name was used in honour to John Lightfoot (1735–1788), famous botanist and collector of type material.
Type species: Lightfootiella montana comb. nov.
