Rhagovelia penta sp. n.

Type material. HOLOTYPE, apt M, allotype apt F: COLOMBIA, Huila, Gigante, 20 V 2010, leg. W. Padilla ( ICN). PARATYPES, same data as holotype, 1 apt M, 1 apt F, 1 macr F ( ICN); 3 apt F (PSO-CZ).

Color and pilosity. General colour brown; central part of abdominal tergite and sternite VII, genital segments, outer rim of connexiva, greater part of antennae, and legs shining black; rostrum shining brown. Anterior transverse band of pronotum, basal 1/3 of first antennal segment; all acetabula, coxae, trochanters, and 2/3 basal of fore femur, yellow. Venter gray. Dorsal and ventral body covered with short, semi-recumbent, golden setae and shining black denticles. Vertex with one pair of dark setae; antennal segment I bearing six long, erect, black setae, two setae of this type also present near middle of segment II; legs with the usual pubescence and setae.

Apterous male. Length 3.76; maximum width 1.40. Length of antennal segments I −IV: 0.98, 0.64, 0.78, 0.62; pronotum shorter than the length of head (0.34/0.28), L/W: 0.28/1.40; length of exposed mesonotum 0.98; length of exposed metanotum at midline 0.08.

Trochanters unarmed. Anterior tibia slightly dilated and slightly flattened on ventral surface. Posterior femur slightly increased, ventral surface in distal half with a row of five spines ( Fig. 56 View FIGURES 55 − 60 ), beginning with a sharp, slender, forward-angling tooth and decreasing in size distally, proximal (largest) spine (0.2); hind femur reaches the apex of abdomen; hind tibia straight, with a longitudinal row of six small, black pegs along 1/3 basal, with three apical teeth and a moderate-length, black, apical spur.

Proportions of male legs as follows: fore femur/tibia/ tarsal 1/ tarsal 2: 1.20/1.24/0.08/0.32; middle femur, length/ tibia/ tarsal 1/tarsal 2/tarsal 3: 1.88/1.48/0.08/0.82/0.82; hind femur length-width/ tibia/ tarsal 1/tarsal 2/ tarsal 3: 1.28−0.36/1.60/0.08/0.26/0.38.

Median length of abdominal tergites as follows: I −III: 0.18, IV: 0.16, V: 0.20, VI: 0.24, VII: 0.42, VIII: 0.32; connexiva angled upward at 30º. Venter slightly convex, lacking longitudinal medial carina , sternite VII>VI>V (0.40, 0.38, 0.22, respectively), genital segments well developed, proctiger ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 − 5 ), parameres (L/W: 0.16/0.08, Fig. 27 View FIGURES 25 − 54 ).

Apterous female. Length 4.90, maximum width 1.64. Length of antennal segments I −IV: 1.06, 0.62, 0.70, 0.58. Posterior femur, ventral surface in distal half with a row of four spines, reaching apex of abdomen, L/W: 2.12−0.28; hind tibia similar to apterous male; tergites IV −VI slightly depressed, connexiva angled upward at 40º. Abdomen L/W: 2.28/1.68. Median length of abdominal tergites as follows: I: 0.22, II −III: 0.20, IV: 0.24, V: 0.30, VI: 0.4, VII: 0.46; tergite VIII horizontal, median length 0.32; basal width of tergite VII: 0.46; proctiger semivertical. Venter, sternite VII>VI>V (0.70, 0.42, 0.36, respectively); gonocoxa well developed, distinctly visible.

Macropterous female. Length 5.46, maximum width 1.26. Similar in general coloration to apterous female, with following exceptions: pronotum brown, with anterior band yellow; covered with short, semi-recumbent, black setae intermixed with scattered, golden setae; posterior half with deep, black punctuations, humeral angles prominent and straight, apex rounded; L/W: 1.26/1.26; hemelytra exceeding (0.42) tip of abdomen, bearing 3 closed cells, 2 long cells originating in the basal portion of the wing followed by one smaller cell ( Fig. 62 View FIGURES 61 − 65 ), displaying uniformly dull brown, darker veins; Sc and R+M+Cu veins covered with short, semi-recumbent brown setae; anterior half hemelytra showing outer rim of connexiva.

Type locality. Rhagovelia penta sp. n., was collected in Gigante, located at 2º 23' 23'' N, 75º 33' W, 860 m, in the Upper Magdalena River Valley, on the south-west slope of the Cordillera Oriental, in the Huila department of the Colombian Andes. The average air temperature in this area is 24 ºC.

Etymology. Penta , a greek noun meaning “five”, refers to spines of hind femur.

Comparative notes. Individuals of Rhagovelia penta sp. n. may be distinguished by the distinctive structure of the male hind leg: femur L/W: 1.28/0.36, bearing 5 spines ( Fig. 56 View FIGURES 55 − 60 ); tibia with (6+3) spines plus a spur at the apex. Other distinguishing characters include the shape of the male proctiger, with a rounded apex on the distal cone, and weakly sinuate lateral margins ( Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 − 5 ); the massive male paramere, with a convex ventral margin, bearing three longer setae and five longer setae on the dorsal margin ( Fig. 27 View FIGURES 25 − 54 ). The paramere is somewhat similar to R. barbacoensis n. sp., but the anterior part of it is produced into a small head (compare Figs. 25, 27 View FIGURES 25 − 54 ).
