Description of male (MIN12_AMP9, Davao Oriental). Head: Labium mostly pale. Mandible bases and genae shining dark brown. Labrum, clypeus, frons and vertex to level of lateral ocelli black with metallic green reflection, remainder of dorsum of head matte black with indistinct brown areas on protruding postocular lobes, joined by brown band ( Fig. 15 View FIGURES 14 – 19 ); underside extensively pale. Antennae dark brown and black.

Thorax: Pronotum and propleuron largely black, pair of pale marks on anterior pronotal lobe, brown marks on rear of middle pronotal lobe, small pale marks laterally on posterior pronotal lobe. Dorsum of synthorax matte black with small pale mark between arms of anterior bifurcation of middorsal carina. Synthorax laterally with bright pale marks as follows ( Fig. 21 View FIGURES 20 – 25 ): along lower side of mesopleural suture a long streak and short streak near antealar carina, longer streak running almost whole length of interpleural suture, narrowly interrupted at ca half its length, larger light brown area above interpleural suture between coxae, larger subtriangular area under metapleural suture near antealar carina, short pale streak under metapleural suture joined to indistinct pale brownish marking adjacent to metinfraepisternum. Area between metapleural carina and venter dark brown. Venter of synthorax brown and pale ( Fig. 30 View FIGURES 30 – 33 ). Legs: Coxae and trochanters brown. Femora extensor surface brown, flexor surface obscurely brown and grey. Tibiae and tarsi dark brown. Wings with arculus ca level of Ax 5, quadrilateral with 2 crossveins, cubito-anal space free in all wings, pt brown with paler center. Wing membrane with faint brownish tint, tips of both wings with heavier brown colour.

Abdomen: Very dark brown to black, S3–7 with broad pale basal ring, brown dorsally, faint lateral remnant of this on S8. Genital ligula typical for the group, seminal vesicle light brown. Anal appendages black. Paraprocts extremely short, rounded, black. Cerci longer than S10, in dorsal view ( Fig. 41 View FIGURES 40 – 45 ) abruptly curved inward after mid length, apical part at more than right angle to proximal part, left cercus lying over right. In both dorsal and lateral ( Fig. 47 View FIGURES 46 – 51 ) views widest at base, narrowing toward turn then moderately expanded apically. Interior surface with slotlike excavation around middle part, extending towards apex, brownish inside groove.

Measurements [mm]: Abdomen without anal appendages 34.5, cerci ca 1, Hw 32.5.

Description of female (Mt Makatoring, North Cotabato). As male except as noted. Head. Extensively brown, postocular lobes pale brown ( Fig. 53 View FIGURES 52 – 57 ). Antennae with scape largely pale.

Thorax: Pronotum ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 58 – 63 ) mottled brown, pale marks on anterior lobe, posterior lobe with yellow lateral patches, extensive whitish grey pruinosity on propleuron. No horns on the middle pronotal lobe. Dorsum of synthorax brown with middorsal carina black, bluish pale mark between arms of anterior bifurcation of middorsal carina. Synthorax laterally brown with pale marks as in male, but pale band under interpleural suture not interrupted ( Fig. 69 View FIGURES 68 – 73 ). Patches of whitish grey pruinosity present, venter of synthorax covered with this. Legs with pruinosity on coxae, Wings with arculus at Ax 5 in all wings, quadrilateral with three crossveins in right Fw, pt black proximally apical ca one-half mostly whitish. Extreme tips of both wings heavily tinted brown, a little darker in Hw.

Abdomen: Cerci black, subtriangular, ca same length as S10. Ovipositor short, only reaching beyond S10 to ca level of tips of cerci.

Measurements [mm]: Abdomen without ovipositor and appendages 35.5, Hw 35.

Remarks. The habitus of a typical male from Mindanao is shown in Fig. 9 View FIGURES 8 – 13 , and the wings of both sexes are illustrated in Figs. 34–35 View FIGURES 34 – 37 . The illustrations of the male anal appendages in Needham & Gyger (1939: plate 13) of the apparently synonymous D. filipina Needham & Gyger, 1939 , have been transposed with those of Vest al is melania Selys, 1873, Figs. 168 and 169 are stated to be D. filipina but are actually V. melania whilst Figs. 166 and 167 show D. filipina .

There is one crossvein in the cubito-anal space of the right Hw of the holotype, despite the statement “Cubitoanal space uncrossed” in the key in Laidlaw (1934). The holotype differs further from the male described above by having reduced pale markings on the head, in particular no brown band between the postocular lobes; there are also small differences in the lateral markings of the synthorax.
