Pieza kake , sp. nov.
Male and female. Length: 1.181.30 mm. Head. Brown. Eyes dichoptic; ocelli forming a narrow triangle; lateral ocellus 1.5 its diameter from inner eye margin; frons slightly longer than wide, depressed medially, brown on upper half, yellow on lower half; antenna brown, scape minute; pedicel slightly wider than long; first flagellomere short, ovoid, broadest at or slightly beyond middle, slightly longer than wide; length of second flagellomere equal to width of first flagellomere; face yellow; proboscis black, projecting beyond oral margin for distance slightly longer than head height; occiput brown, with sparse black hairs.
Thorax. Mesonotum dull brown with yellow vittae; humeral callus, interhumeral triangular mark (the latter two contiguous) lateral margin, postalar callus, admedian vitta, and prescutellar area yellow; brown color of mesonotum almost reaching base of scutellum; dorsum of mesonotum with scattered black hairs; scutellum brownish with dark brown to black on posterior and lateral margins, paler brown medially, with scattered dark hairs; pleura brown; legs yellow, apical tarsal segments brown; halter stem yellow, knob yellow with brown color on edges.
Wing. Hyaline; veins brown; costa ending at midpoint between end of veins R4+5 and M1; cell r1 infuscated yellow; cell r4+5 longer than cell dm; vein R2+3 arising at nearly 90°; cell dm narrowed apically; vein at base of cell m1 shorter than rm crossvein.
Abdomen. Dorsum brown, without contrasting pale fasciae; venter brown medially, yellow laterally.
Genitalia. Not dissected.
Types. Holotype male and allotype female from BRAZIL: Belo Horizonte: Pampulha, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais campus, 19°52' S, 43°58' W, 830 m, 2.vi.1996, Malaise trap, J.C.R. Fontenelle. Paratype: 1 female, topotypic, collected with the types. Holotype and allotype in MNRJ, paratype female in BPBM.
Etymology. The specific epithet derives from the Hawaiian “ kake ” = “Jack”; and is named for my mentor in bee fly studies, Jack Hall.
Remarks. One of the paratype females is darker than the holotype and allotype, but otherwise fits in all the salient characters that distinguish the species.
Distribution. Known only from the type locality in Brazil.
