Diagnosis

Adult ( Figure 8E View Figure 8 ). Wingspan 13.0–17.5 mm. This species is similar to H. lutatella (Herrich-Schäffer) in the male genitalia ( Figure 6A View Figure 6 ), but differs from the latter in the brown to dark brown forewing with circular spots at middle and near end of cell, with long oval dark brown spot at middle of fold; the eighth tergite with anterior margin deeply emarginate on mesial half in the male genitalia ( Figure 6C View Figure 6 ); and the signum present in the female genitalia ( Figure 6B View Figure 6 ).

Remarks

According to the figures provided by Diakonoff (1967), H. tristella (Snellen) is similar to H. triannulella (Herrich-Schäffer) by the spots on the forewing margined with lightcoloured scales; the ductus bursae slender, banded, and the corpus bursae broadened anteriorly, with a small signum in the female genitalia. The two species are hard to distinguish, and more material is needed to distinguish them from each other adequately.
