Phaenocora bresslaui Marcus, 1946 View in CoL

(Figs 13D, 16C)

Phaenocora bresslaui Marcus 1946: 66 View in CoL –76, 78, 80–82, 164–166, Figs 81–83; Marcus & Marcus 1959: 18 –19; Steinböck 1966: 170; Noreña et al. 2004: 234.

Known distribution: Canindé (São Paulo, Brazil), in a small stagnant lake and in lake Corôa, which is connected to the river Tietê; river Pinheiros (São Paulo, Brazil) near the bridge at Jaguaré between the roots of Eichhornia crassipes View in CoL (Water hyacinth); a stream in Tremembé (São Paulo, Brazil) near the hills of Cantareira ( Marcus 1946).

Material examined: None.

Diagnosis: Animals about 3 mm long, with a reddish head. With a small tail. Eyes red. Zoochlorellae absent. The male copulatory organ of the duplex-type IIIA. Female genital system of the EVELINAE - type. Female genital canal distally with a diverticulum, at the left side. With a lobular intestinal bursa, which is connected to the gut by a very rudimentary genito-bursal duct. A sphincter is present between the female genital canal and the intestinal bursa.

Remarks: The diverticulum of the female genital canal is more proximally situated than that of P. evelinae ( Marcus 1946) . According to Marcus (1946), the sphincter between the female genital canal and the intestinal bursa is not a genito-bursal duct, so the female system is not of the AGLOBULATA - type.
