Diagnosis. Face covered with dense punctures. Antenna with 16–17 flagellomeres. Mesopleuron covered with dense punctures except for on and below speculum (Fig. 9). Propodeal carinae complete. Metasoma polished and dorsoventrally depressed. Transverse impressions distinct on T I to T IV. T I 0.90–1.25 × as long as maximum width. T II 0.55–0.70 × as long as maximum width. T II and T III rugulose but also covered with large and dense punctures (Fig. 10). Face black except for a pair of longitudinal stripes along inner orbit yellow (Fig. 8). Scutellum largely yellow. Mesopleuron entirely black (Figs 7, 9). Coxae orange (Fig. 7). Hind tibia is banded as “black-white-blackorange” (Fig. 7). Metasoma black except for posterior part of T I to T III orange (Fig. 10). T I to T IV often entirely orange.

Distribution. Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Sado Is., Hachijyojima Is., Ogasawara Isis., Shikoku, Kyusyu, Tanegashima Is., Amamioshima Is., Okinawajima Is., and Iriomotejima Is.); this species has also worldwide distribution.

Bionomics. A number of hoverfly species have been recorded as a host (See Yu et al. 2016 for detail). In Japan, the following seven species have been recorded as a host: Betasyrphus serarius (Wiedemann, 1830) ; Episyrphus balteatus (De Geer, 1776) ; Eupeodes (Metasyrphus) corollae (Fabricius, 1749) , Eupeodes frequens Matsumura, 1917 ; Ischiodon scutellaris (Fabricius, 1805) ; Meliscaeva omogensis (Shiraki & Edashige, 1953) ; Platycheirus urakawensis (Matsumura, 1919) ( Uchida, 1957; Minamikawa, 1969; Kusigemati, 1981).

Remarks. This is the first record of this species from Tanegashima Island and Iriomotejima Island. This is the most commonly collected species and is a characteristic species of this genus. It can be easily distinguished from any other species of this genus by the tricolored hind tibia and orange color of metasoma. Klopfstein (2014) noted that the male of this species has been collected in North America and India. In Japan, no male of this species was identified.
