Etymology: The epithet refers to Costa Rica, the country where the type locality of this species was collected.
Diagnosis: Selenyphantes costaricensis is the only species of the genus where the males have a radical complex tertiary apophysis (RCt; Figs 33A, 35A). Females of S. costaricensis have an epigynum similar to S. longispinosus and S. orizabae but with the lateral edges converging to the posterior edge of the epigynum slightly convex ( Figs 29E, 34D).
Description: Male (holotype TSM 790). Total length 2.57. Prosoma 1.16 long, 1.00 wide. Prosoma height 0.95, fovea height 0.75. Opisthosoma 1.41 long, 0.84 wide, 1.08 high. Clypeus height 0.2. AME 0.04, ALE 0.05, PME 0.06, PLE 0.06. Femur I 2.24 (1.94× prosoma length). Prosoma light yellow, without marks. Opisthosoma light grey with white guanine spots sparkled on the laterals. Legs same colour as the prosoma, without any marks ( Fig. 26A–D). RCm and RCs both dorsoventrally flattened and divergent, forming a ‘V’-shape structure ( Fig. 28F–H). RCm slightly curved upwards with distal part with papillae ( Figs 28G, 33E). RCs short, pointing downwards. RCs canoed-shape ( Figs 28H, 32E).
Female (paratype). Total length 2.18. Prosoma 0.95 long, 0.85 wide. Prosoma height 0.76, fovea height 0.66. Opisthosoma 1.23 long, 1.09 wide, 1.52 high. Clypeus height 0.14. AME 0.04, ALE 0.06, PME 0.06, PLE 0.05. Femur I 1.78 (1.88× prosoma length), Metatarsus I 2.09, TmI 0.18. Prosoma light yellow, without marks. Opisthosoma light grey with white guanine spots sparkled laterally. Legs same colour as the prosoma, without any marks ( Fig. 27A–D). Copulatory opening small, confined to the anterior third of the septum ( Fig. 34D). Spermathecae positioned medially (whereas their concavity is outward; Fig. 29E).
