A large genus with 57 species, 12 of which occur in Ecuador. Most species are small with various red or blue and black color patterns, some species with green stripes ( Figs. 30a & b View FIGURE 30 ). The latest revision with illustrated keys is by Garrison (2009); Machado (2010) provided an update. Most species inhabit weed-choked ponds, marshes and swamps with floating aquatic plants, some in deeply shaded forest.

Note: Until recently, this species had been reported only along a 50 km stretch of the upper Río Napo and lower Río Anzu, at ponds and marshes near the road between Puerto Napo and J.S.B.S. Lodge which runs along the south bank of the Río Napo.
