A poorly known genus; with five species recorded for Ecuador; the group is in need of further study. See Garrison & von Ellenrieder (2005), Pérez-Gutiérrez & Montes-Fontalvo (2011c) and Daigle (2014) for identification. Adults perch for most of the day in dark shade with wings together ( Fig. 45 View FIGURE 45 ), being difficult to spot. Nymphs live in sheet flow on nearly vertical rocks at the edges of small, forested, mountainous streams (Tennessen 2010).

Note: Garrison et al. (2010) suggested that H. superbum may be a junior synonym of H. sanguinipes . We elect to retain it here as a valid species until further studies warrant otherwise.

Heteropodagrion varipes Daigle, 2014 . MS, Morona: Daigle (2014 — Holotype ♂, Macas 20.3 km W on Gua- mote Rd, 0.6 km W on Río Albanico, two rocky waterfall streams (-2.2475, -78.2067, 1536m), 18 ix 05, leg. JJD [FSCA]). Note: All known specimens were collected along the road between Macas and Guamote at small waterfalls.
