Erythrodiplax Brauer, 1868 View in CoL

This is the most species-rich genus (58 described species) of Anisoptera in the Neotropics. The basic reference is Borror (1942); see also Borror (1957) and Paulson (2003). At least 21 species are recorded in Ecuador and more may occur here. Adults are small to medium sized and variously colored in red, brown or black ( Figs. 95a,b,c,d View FIGURE 95 ). As expected, the habitats occupied are diverse, including ponds, lakes, sloughs, marshes, brackish water, phytotelmata, and pools in slow streams. A synoptic update of the genus is warranted.

Note: All former records of E. connata ( Burmeister, 1839) and E. connata connata from Ecuador are of E. fusca according to Paulson (2003). Also the various references to forms “a–d” of connata could be either E. fusca or even E. abjecta . Since these specimens were not available to study nor contribute additional provincial or cantonal records to either species, their data are not included in this study. The abdomen of west slope specimens is not pruinose and specimens are often referred to as “red form” whereas those from the eastern slopes are pruinose.
