Genus Coecobrya Yosii, 1956 View in CoL
New diagnosis
Newly introduced characters are italicized. Medium size Entomobryidae (0.9 to 2.5 mm). No scales. Polymacrochaetotic chaetotaxy. Labral formula 4/5, 5, 4, all smooth. No labral papillae. Labrum margin with inverted median U-form intrusion. Chaetae MELL of labium (Gisin 1967) always smooth. Reduced number of eyes (0 to 2 on each side). Pigment reduced or absent. Four antennal segments (I and II not subdivided, IV not annulated). No apical bulb. Fourth abdominal tergite 2.5 to 4 times longer than the third one. Thoracic chaetotaxy of the multiplet type (Szeptycki 1979). Trochanteral organ of leg III always present, with 7 to 30 spines. Dens without spines. Falcate mucro with a basal spine .
Remarks
Yosii (1964) listed two other characters for differentiating Coecobrya from Sinella : the presence of one to three short thickened apical S-chaetae on antennal segment II (Ant. II organ), and a more reduced chaetotaxy on ventral tube. These characters do not differentiate between the two genera if mucro morphology is considered as the discriminant character (Deharveng 1990); nor do they discriminate the two genera using Yosii’s theory (Yosii 1964). Rather, they should be considered as specific.
