Diagnosis. Thinly encrusting, cushion-shaped or irregularly digitate growth forms. Consistency spongy, elastic, or very soft and limp. Colour brown or purplish. Oxeas short, ranging from vestigial to cigar-shaped; a high variation in form and size may occur within the same species. Spongin usually abundant, with high variation within one species. No microscleres (from De Weerdt 2002).
