Gymnetron pilosum brondelii Brisout

Gymnetron pilosum Gyllenhal var. brondelii Brisout, 1862: 659 ;

Gymnetron hispidum Brullé subsp. brondelii Brisout ; Mimeur 1949: 112.

Brisout described the variety brondelii from specimens collected in Algeria (without a more precise locality) and thought it to differ from typical G. p i l o s u m only in its smaller size. Although described as an infrasubspecific entity, it was considered as a subspecies of G. h i s p i d u m by Mimeur (1949) and therefore is deemed to carry this rank, according to Art. 45.6.4.1 (ICZN 1999). Unfortunately no syntypes of this taxon were found at the MNHN, including in the Brisout collection, nor in any other museum, and, in order to fix its identity and taxonomic status, it is therefore necessary to designate a neotype for it, in accord with the conditions of Art. 75 of the ICZN (1999). A male with handwritten rectangular labels reading "Philipville, Algérie, ex Bonnaire / pilosum v. Brondeli -H. Bris -/ G. hispidulum [sic] Brullé", placed in the Hoffmann collection (MNHN), is here designated as the neotype of Gymnetron pilosum var. brondelii Brisout, 1862 (des. Caldara). This specimen corresponds to our taxon B as well as to all other similar specimens from North Africa.
